How the tip calculator works

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Each person pays = total ÷ number of people

Worked example

A $84.50 bill with an 18% tip, split between 3 people:

Splitting rounds each share to the cent, so the shares can add up to a cent or two more or less than the total - here, 3 × $33.24 is $99.72.

Working it out in your head

10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left: $84.50 becomes $8.45. Double it for 20% ($16.90), or add half of it again for 15% ($8.45 + $4.23 = $12.68).

Frequently asked questions

What's a typical tip percentage?

In the US, 15-20% is typical for restaurant table service, with 18-20% common for good service. Norms vary a lot by country and service type, so use whatever fits your situation.

Should I tip on the total including tax?

Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the full total (including tax) is also common and simpler. This calculator applies the tip percentage to whatever bill amount you enter.

How is the per-person amount split?

The total bill plus tip is divided evenly by the number of people. It does not account for people ordering different amounts - for that, split individual items first, then use this calculator per share.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits the total evenly. For an uneven split, work out each person's share of the bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share.
