How pay conversion works
Every conversion goes through annual pay. The calculator first works out what you earn in a year, then divides it into whichever period you need:
A full-time year of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. That's where the quick rule of thumb comes from: an hourly rate of $25 is about $52,000 a year, and a $50,000 salary is about $24 an hour.
Pay periods
| Pay period | Paychecks a year | Each paycheck |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | Annual pay ÷ 52 |
| Biweekly (every two weeks) | 26 | Annual pay ÷ 26 |
| Semimonthly (twice a month) | 24 | Annual pay ÷ 24 |
| Monthly | 12 | Annual pay ÷ 12 |
Biweekly and semimonthly sound alike but differ: biweekly pay comes every other Friday, say, giving 26 paychecks and two months a year with three. Semimonthly pay comes on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day of the month, giving 24 slightly larger paychecks.
Worked example
At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week for 52 weeks: 25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year, $4,333.33 a month, $2,000 every two weeks and $1,000 a week.

| $50,000 | $24.04 | $4,166.67 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $5,000.00 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 | $6,250.00 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $8,333.33 |
Why some employers divide by 2,087
A calendar year is 52 weeks plus one or two days, so the number of working days varies slightly from year to year. The US Office of Personnel Management uses an average of 2,087 hours a year to turn federal salaries into hourly rates - for example, $70,623 ÷ 2,087 = $33.84 an hour. Some private employers do the same. Enter 52.175 paid weeks to match it.
Things the conversion leaves out
- Tax, Social Security, health insurance and other deductions - these figures are gross pay.
- Overtime: in the US, eligible hourly workers are usually paid 1.5 times their rate for hours over 40 in a week.
- Benefits such as paid leave, retirement contributions and health cover, which can be worth a lot when comparing an hourly job with a salaried one.
