How the grade converter works

Percentage to letter: the converter finds the highest letter whose minimum you have reached, using the scale in the table above. 88% is at least 87%, the minimum for a B+, but below the 90% needed for an A-, so it is a B+.

Letter to percentage: each letter covers a range, so the converter shows the midpoint. B+ covers 87-89%, so it shows 88%. For an F, which covers 0-59%, it shows 30%.

There is no rounding: 89.9% is still a B+ here, even though some teachers would round it up.

Each letter also maps to grade points on the 4.0 scale used by the GPA Calculator, from 4.0 for an A or A+ down to 0.0 for an F.

Why your school's scale may differ

Frequently asked questions

What grading scale does this use?

The standard US scale where A+/A is 93–100%, A- is 90–92%, and so on down through F at 59% and below.

Why does letter-to-percentage give just one number?

A letter grade represents a range of percentages, so we show the midpoint of that range as a representative estimate - your actual score could be anywhere within the band shown.

Will this match my school's exact grading scale?

It should be close, but some schools use slightly different cutoffs. Always confirm against your syllabus or institution's official scale for anything that counts.

Is 89.5% an A- or a B+?

On this scale it is a B+, because it is below 90%. Whether it rounds up to an A- depends on your teacher's or school's rounding policy.
