How the GPA calculator works

Each grade is converted to grade points on the 4.0 scale and multiplied by the course's credit hours. The results are added up and divided by your total credit hours - so a 4-credit course counts for more than a 1-credit course.

GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits

For the weighted GPA, honors courses get 0.5 extra points and AP or IB courses get 1.0 extra point before averaging. Failing grades (F) don't get the bonus.

Worked example

Example GPA calculation for four courses
CourseGradeCreditsPoints × creditsWeighted
EnglishA312.012.0
BiologyB+413.213.2
AP US HistoryA-311.114.1
Spanish (Honors)B39.010.5
Total1345.349.8

Unweighted GPA = 45.3 ÷ 13 = 3.48. Weighted GPA = 49.8 ÷ 13 = 3.83, because AP US History gains 1.0 point per credit and the honors course 0.5.

Why your GPA might differ from your school's

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA treats every course equally on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra credit for Honors and AP/IB courses, which is why it can exceed 4.0.

What grading scale does this use?

The standard US 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades (A+ and A both count as 4.0, A- as 3.7, and so on down to F).

Can I add or remove courses?

Yes - use "Add Course" for as many classes as you need, and remove any row you don't need with its Remove button.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Enter all of your courses from every term, each with its credit hours. Because the calculator weights each course by its credits, this gives the same result as combining your term GPAs weighted by the credits in each term.
