How the final grade calculator works

Your final course grade is a weighted average of the grade you have now and your final exam score:

Course grade = current × (1 − w) + exam × w

Rearranging that for the exam score gives the score you need:

Score needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
current
- your grade so far, as a percentage
target
- the overall grade you want
w
- the final exam's weight as a decimal (30% = 0.3)

Worked example

Your current grade is 82%, the final is worth 30%, and you want 85% overall:

(85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 92.0%

You need 92.0% on the final.

The more the final is worth, the more it can move your grade in either direction. A result above 100% means the target can't be reached through the final alone.

Things to keep in mind

Frequently asked questions

What if the required score is over 100%?

That means your desired grade isn't reachable through the final exam alone, given your current standing - you'd need extra credit or a grade change elsewhere.

What if the required score is 0% or negative?

It means you've already secured your desired grade based on your current standing, regardless of your final exam score.

Does this account for extra credit?

No - it assumes a standard 0–100% scale for both your current grade and the final. Extra credit would need to be factored in separately.

How much does the final exam affect my grade?

Each point you score on the final moves your course grade by the final's weight. With a final worth 30%, every 10 points on the exam changes your overall grade by 3 points.
