How weighted grades work

In a weighted grading system, some work counts for more than other work. A syllabus might say homework is 20% of the grade, the midterm 30% and the final exam 50%. Your course grade is a weighted average: each score is multiplied by its weight, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights:

Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

Worked example

Weighted grade worked example
CategoryScoreWeightScore × weight
Homework92%20%18.4
Midterm85%30%25.5
Final exam78%50%39.0
Total100%82.9

The weights add up to 100%, so the course grade is 82.9 ÷ 100 = 82.9%, a B- on a common US scale. A simple average of the three scores would give 85%, because it treats the homework as if it counted as much as the final.

Grades partway through a course

Before the final exam, only the homework and midterm are graded - 50% of the course. Dividing by the weight so far gives your current grade: (18.4 + 25.5) ÷ 50 = 87.8%. Leave out anything that hasn't been graded yet and the calculator does this for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add those together, and divide by the total of the weights. With homework 92% (20%), midterm 85% (30%) and final 78% (50%), the grade is (18.4 + 25.5 + 39) ÷ 100 = 82.9%.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

If you've only entered the work graded so far, the result is your current grade on that work. If the weights are meant to cover the whole course but add up to more or less than 100%, the calculator scales each to its share of the total - check the syllabus.

What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted average?

An unweighted average treats every score equally. A weighted average lets important work, like a final exam, count for more. The same scores can give quite different grades.

How do I calculate my GPA instead?

GPA uses credit hours as the weights and grade points instead of percentages. Use the GPA Calculator for that.
